Sebastian Junger, reflecting on American soldiering in Afghanistan, notes the intimacy impelled by the deep stress imposed with the demands of such existential encounters. My brain immediately leaped across the space I was standing in, to an open area in another place I'm familiar with.
What these two places have in common is an interest in wilderness preservation along with development that is respectful of eco-conservation. People will have different ideas of what those ideas taken as mandates mean, of course. But it's good to do this leaping back and forth exercise in my head before I try it really, given that I haven't yet perfected the gentle art of leaping over tall buildings in a single bound.
